Strapping in for Easter

The big wet has not been enough to dampen the passion and anticipation building for Emerald’s annual Easter Rodeo.

With two weeks until the event, excitement is mounting as competitors prepare their horses for what is sure to be another bucking good time.

Emerald Rodeo Association president Shane Kenny said more than 200 competitors are expected, with close to 2000 spectators anticipated.

“The stock’s ready, and I think all the cowboys are pretty excited,” Kenny said.

“There’s a lot who haven’t had too many events this year, so no doubt they’ll be looking for an outing.”

Despite recent flooding in Central West Queensland, it is not expected to impact the rodeo itself. Plenty of big names in the sport, including Australian Saddle Bronc Champion Greg Hamilton, will be making an appearance at the highly anticipated event.

The Emerald Rodeo is one of several rodeo events happening over the Easter weekend, with the Destiny Downs Easter Thursday and Good Friday Jackpot events (18-19 April) taking place before the main rodeo on Saturday, 20 April.

“There will be about $50,000 in prize money up for grabs, which attracts a lot of competitors from South-East Queensland, North Queensland, and Northern New South Wales,” Kenny said.

“The Emerald area itself has large contingent of people who are actually at the top of the standings in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association.”
